Leiden University Medical Centre is a larger research university hospital. The Department of Anatomy and Embryology is a research a teaching department within the LUMC, headed by Professor Christine Mummery.
The department has three main activities:
- Teaching gross and microscopic anatomy, and embryology to medical and biomedical students and providing specific courses to postgraduate and postdoctoral medical specialists in training.
- Research on normal and abnormal development, pathomorphology and function of the cardiovascular system and mechanisms underlying pluripotency in germ cells. Mouse, chicken and stem cells are used as experimental model systems and where appropriate, results are extrapolated to human development and disease. Research includes studies on human embryonic and induced pluripotency stem cells.
- Teaching and research in Forensic Anatomy in collaboration with the Netherlands Forensic Institute
